KIDabra International News
|
June Greetings!
As we move into Summer in much of the world I wish you well with a busy show season. Here in the US, many of us are hard at work launching our Summer reading programs for libraries, shows for summer camps and more! It's an exciting and creative time! There is much news ahead as we are in full ramp up to conference time! As you read through this newsletter especially the next few paragraphs and when you get into to the Conference section you're going to come to some thoughts of mine that may seem radical, controversial and perhaps conversation worthy. That's good! Please let it concern you, inspire you and move you to action!
OK, you may have heard that the economy is bad. You know that everything consumable is skyrocketing in price. However did you know the top performers in our industry are reporting the busiest year they've had in ages? Stan Allen and I were talking about this recently and he reminded me of the old axiom of when times are bad, entertainment booms as an escape for people. Interesting to ponder.
As you're considering the investment in attending the KIDabra Conference this year let me take a moment to mention a few things. Are you thinking - where is Pigeon Forge? What about the cost? I booked a show?
Pigeon Forge is at the apex of Interstate 40, I-81 and I-75, which as Barry Mitchell says, makes it a crossroads of America. Around the world people know the incredible music of Dolly Parton. Pigeon Forge is where she hails from and the incredible resort area has sprung largely from her fame, oh and the fact that the area is breathtakingly beautiful helps too!
Here's the "Real Skinny" about cost this year. The only real increase will probably be that it will be a few more dollars to travel in, whether by car or plane, however, if you do the math over last year it is not a major increase. So the real truth is, yes it will cost a smidgen more to come this year, or look at it this way a smidgen of one shows profit. By the way our official shuttle from the airport: Rocky Top Tours is amazingly the same price as last year! Need a roommate? Check out the section on the Forum for locating a perfect match!
Now about that show you booked during conference time - if the folks that hired you like you, they will let you move the date, so that you can go and have professional training time. They as professionals do this themselves, so they more than understand. If it's a high paying must do date, attend the conference around it. I do this all the time with conferences. It's always better to miss a little, than to miss everything. I saw a fascinating post on the Magic Cafe recently from a performer saying that while he was going to a convention this summer it was one just to have fun and he continued posting that he really should be going to KIDabra instead, because it would be good for his show and his business. Astounding? Not really. We humans do some strange things without good explanations and we can truly on occasion be our own worst enemies. The good news is that KIDabra Conference is indeed educational, plus it's so much fun you leave with a big smile on your face everytime. (Just ask Melanie Michaels, Fairy Twinkletoes) who comes each year from Australia or Josip (Jozo Bozo) who attends each year from Croatia. They each spend 20+ hours on a plane to be there! So no whining about how far you have to travel! It is telling that the top performers in our industry mark off this week and make KIDabra Conference a must do. By the by, you will be amazed at the star names not on the roster, just there attending. Really!
We all have excuses, but the bottom line is do you have the passion and the desire to continue to raise the level of your own work? Do you and your business deserve to be stimulated by being around a group of people just like you for that shot in the arm, and kick in the pants that we all need from time to time? The "best" tell me they do! If your answer is yes, then there is a place you must be in August, something you must do for your audiences and for yourself! The good news is that your going to have an awesome time doing it! Register today! We can't wait to see you!
KIDabra Journal News
The April/May Issue of The KIDabra Journal is in the mail. Yes, it is running a tad late. Working with creative types (some of my favorite people) has one pitfall, they often don't understand deadlines. Oy! However, you gotta love 'em as the results are pretty awesome! The June/July issue is with our designer at the moment and we start proofing it in a few days and the August/September special Yearbook issue is in the final gathering phase. Wow, is the one thing I can tell you about these issues!
Speaking of the Journal, David Kaye has a favor. He needs your questions for his "Ask David Kaye" column in the Journal. Ask for help from a pro on routines, shows, tricks, where tricks come from, ideas on problem solving, challenges at KIDshows, etc. He will answer! E mail them to David at getsilly@aol.com. By the by, I hope you've been enjoying David here in the US on the VH-1 reality show CelebraCadabra. It's been highly entertaining! David and his Celebrity student Lisa Ann Walter were just voted off from the final 3. However that doesn't mean you've seen the last of them on the program, see David and Lisa again in the upcoming Las Vegas Finale of the show. (Incidentally, It's a hoot just to see what Max Maven is going to do with his hair from week to week.) I hear that VH1.com has viewing available online, but for whatever reason only in the US.

Come be a part of an amazing happening, this year at the 2008 KIDabra International Conference that may well affect the future of Family and KIDshows for years to come!
The assemblage of the top minds in our industry for The Year of The Creative promises to be inspirational, educational and downright magical! Don't think your creative? Want to be more so? Want to have the best program possible for your audiences? We thought so, please read on: The Year of the Creative happens this year because we need a jolt. Our art form while not stagnant, quite frankly needs an infusion. To be sure there are a handful of wildly creative folks doing this daily, however a handful is not enough. We want to help each of you to become creative dynamos. I know, I hear you now, "I'm just not that creative" you say, "I don't have the time," sorry but we're not buying it! Complacent clones are becoming much to common in our performing industry, folks who are happy to buy routines and entire shows and put themselves into business doing prepackaged performances as they come out of the box. Not only do you not have to do this, but we're going to give you permission and the tools to color outside of the lines, change things around and make them your own! Why? Because the best do and why shouldn't that be you? We're going to spend nearly a week exploring, working, laughing and thinking about this in August, with some of the best in the business.
Don't dare miss our Creative Geniuses August 13th-16th in the beautiful resort town of Pigeon Forge, TN nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains. (Made world famous by Dolly Parton and Terry Evanswood)
Come meet Michael Mode, Doug Scheer and Brian Daniel - 3 Wildly Creative Guys.
Michael Mode is the guy you know from napkinrose.com. David Kaye and I were fortunate to meet Michael through our friend Warren Stephens a few years ago and Michael is much too charming, much too handsome and much too creative, plus on top of all that he's a super nice guy! He's done some pretty amazing things: graduated from Disney University, been a part of Copperfield's elite illusion development team, The Magic Squad, in constant demand in Detroit by the major automobile companies to work and perform around the US for their trade shows. To KIDabra conference this year, he brings a fresh perspective of ideas and thinking that will knock you out. His thoughts on performing for children in restaurants are some of the best existant, plus his terrific concepts on creativity, easy going manner and winning personality all add up to grand slam for you!
Doug Scheer A guy of Scheer Genius, Doug Scheer actually. This past January in Las Vegas at the invitational brainstorming conference KGB, I met Doug for the first time. Listening to and seeing his ideas left the rest of us blown away, with our mouths wide open! (And this is a group that's hard to do to) Three of his routines have been published in David Kaye's column Turn It Around in Magic magazine over the past few years and he's one of the best around at tying educational material to magic routines. You'll see him perform those 3 routines from David's column "live" and more. Here's a clue about Doug's lecture: Do you know the term "sleeper hit"? He's an underground working pro who normally doesn't do conventions, however he's coming to KIDabra Conference! And even better, Michael Mode joins his friend Doug as moderator of the talk.
Brian Daniel of Creative Magic is the creative dynamo behind creativemagic.org and you may even use his Bigger Wands, The Change Cap and The Shadow Tent Illusion. Join him for a seminar that teaches you his simple, yet revolutionary, 2 step approach to being creative. By the way if you don't think your creative, wait until Brian works with you, Wow! As an example he takes you through the development of his wildly successful Change Cap, plus you'll even hear about his creative failures as well. Most important learning his steps will allow you to leave with the ability to create yourself. Practice makes perfect with creativity and Brian puts you on the path! These are KIDabra Conference Don't Miss Feature Events!

Marty Hahne:The 3 P's - Personality, Performance, and Packaging! Many marketing courses have great information on getting more bookings, but they all come with one caveat: you must have a great show. With The 3 P's you get a message from a performer who is the whole package. Join longtime, professional magician Marty Hahne, as he presents the three P's of marketing-Personality, Performance and Packaging. This lecture will focus primarily on the birthday party market, however these principals and techniques are adaptable to most markets. To avoid burnout in the birthday market, Marty will show you how to design a show that you can carry in easily, set up fast and tear down even faster. Instead of offering a big, prop filled show, Marty will reveal the secrets of having a personality driven show. Your personality is the key to becoming the best known, most in-demand performer in your area. Marty will also show you how to present the entire package, with services to help your clients and make you more money. Publicity and referral strategies, giveaways, magic classes after the show and goody bags are just a part of packaging. With Marty's lecture, you'll learn to get more shows, enjoy your work and make more money. Join Marty for an educational and entertaining morning as you discover why Mark Daniel has nicknamed the seemingly quiet, mild-mannered Marty "Mr. Controversy!"
Plus lectures from Jim Snack, Brian Daniel of Creative Magic, Nathan J Roberts and more, stay tuned! KIDshow Business Building Seminars start Tuesday evening and continue throughout the day on Wednesday. The Optional Marketing Sessions are only $94.95 in addition to your KIDabra Conference registration. Please take a moment and register, make your hotel reservations, travel plans and then we'll see you at KIDabra Conference in August! We can't wait!

The Music Road Hotel Complex hosts KIDabra Conference 2008 For 2008 the Conference return to Pigeon Forge and the Music Road Hotel.
Great rooms, on property water parks- pools, indoor and outdoor, water slides, lazy river and more, coupled with an excellent free continental breakfast each morning make for a great whole family treat.
Melanie Michaels from Australia and John Reid from Long Island both say the Music Road is like going to a retreat. We'll be housed in both the Music Road Hotel and the Inn with the conference center between. The Inn is only a few steps further from the free standing conference center, the Hotel is best if you have special needs, also half of the rooms at the Hotel overlook the river. If the whole family is coming pick the inn for the most water activities, although no matter which building you're in you have full access. The complex is located at Traffic light 1 in Pigeon Forge in a quiet cul de sac just off the main drag, turn at the Ruby Tuesday's Restaurant. Surrounding it for a mile in every direction are restaurants to please every taste and that huge Wal-Mart in Sevierville is only 4 or 5 minutes drive, not to mention every outlet store known to man. Rooms in the KIDabra block are only $91.00 per night for 2 queen beds. (This special conference rate off regular rate of up to $119.00) (Suites available at a higher rate.) Call Music Road Toll Free at 866-615-6353 and tell them you're with KIDabra. Every room night counts toward our reserved block and makes the conference possible. See more at musicroadhotel.com. Our group is served by Donna in Group Reservations. Her direct number is 865-286-1780, Monday thru Friday. Take a moment and make your reservation today!
If flying into for KIDabra Conference, certainly you could rent a car if you have extra time for sightseeing, however our Official Shuttle from the McGee/Tyson Airport in Knoxville is Rocky Top Tours, with amazingly, the same price as last year, $30.00 one way or $60.00 round trip. As I travel around the US, I find this very reasonable.
Food availability at the Conference
Restaurants are easily walkable. (Ruby Tuesdays is immediately next to the hotel and Cracker Barrel and a Giant Buffet Restaurant are close, but across the street. Tons of every kind of food are within a mile of the hotel and conference center up and down the strip, remember this is a resort town. The hotel has an excellent free deluxe continental breakfast with your room and the conference center serves lunch and snack items for purchase throughout the day. Refrigerators are also in the sleeping rooms. The Super Wal-Mart is less than 3 minutes by car (one of the biggest I've ever been in) with a full grocery for stocking your fridge with drinks, fruits and snacks if you want. There is a very inexpensive shuttle that stops every few minutes in the parking lot of the conference center that will take you up and down the strip. (Just be mindful of the fact that it makes lots of stops if you're on a schedule.) We continue to update kidabra.org. Keep Checking!

The KIDabra E News goes out to interested parties and media organizations.
A Note for all KI Chapters, current and prospective: Do invite new folks to attend a couple of times, with no obligations. After those initial
visits to become a member of your chapter they must first join KIDabra International, then your chapter. This makes your chapter healthy with a solid foundation. On meeting night, leave egos down the street. I know it's challenging, we're show folk after all. Put members to work with individual assignments each meeting. Ask them to do book reports, mini lectures, prop reviews, brag sessions, marketing minute, techniques of performance, refreshments, etc... Have a great time of fellowshipping, keep video presentations to 10 minutes or less and the business meeting outside of the general meeting. (usually prior to is best.) Be respectful of your pros in attendance, quizzing them about fees and bookings make them feel like hunted animals with vultures hovering overhead and scare them away! (Really! ) Above all keep it fun!

What if there was a place and a group of people that existed to meet the special needs of folks who perform for kids and families? What if there was a place to motivate you, educate you and point you in the right direction? What if there was a place that helped person after person build successful performance careers? What if all of this really existed? A place so good that your competitors won't tell you they are a member because they want to keep all the resources for themselves. It does! It is KIDabra International!
