Summer Greetings!
Amazing! All the activity buzzing around us at the moment. While it's a lousy economy world wide, it's actually a good time to be an artist. Wait a minute, we're artists! It's a good time to be us!
Speaking of which their is a hilarious and brilliant new youtube video up at www.kidabra.org starring David Kaye as a vent and Brad Ross as his puppet. Thanks to the camera work of John Carlson and direction of Bruce Bray for this wonderful KIDabra promo video and piece of art to enjoy.
Feeding the Artist!
It has been a magical experience for me working on and developing new material these past few weeks for the summer show. The research, the brainstorming, the thinking, the writing, then putting it all together and presenting it before an audience is exhilarating! From taking out the new show and performing it, running home to tweak music here and there, adding in this prop or that, it is what we as performers thrive on. Ken Scott, Todd McKinney, probably you, and I are all doing the same thing at the same moment. It's nice to touch base by phone or e mail with each other and see how the season is progressing. The same is happening everywhere for library shows, summer camps, VBS and more. As the weeks roll along, our time will transition to working on school shows, Halloween shows, holiday shows, and more. Whew! It's fast and furious and it is the life of a KIDshow performer. It is this activity
that
keeps an artist, fresh and relevant.
What fuels the inspiration for this art? Actually, one of the important events of the year artistically, networking wise, resource wise, and fellowship wise, is the KIDabra Conference. Just being in the swirl of it all is refreshing. Every year brings "ah ha!" inspired moments, lifelong friends, and yes, the fuel to power our year.
The KIDabra Conference is an investment in your future, your livelihood, to you as a performer/artist and to your audience. Come be inspired! Get energized! Be a part of the 2009 KIDabra Conference. Be a part of the passion, vision, and adventure that really does happen in only one place, with one group, once a year! The KIDabra Conference 2009, The Year of the Performer! It's the Don't Miss Artistic Event of the year for folk like us.
A Very Active Teenager
Somebody asked me recently what's it's like to have a grand old conference of 18 years of age. Truthfully we're just now a teenager transitioning into being accepted seriously in our field. It really has taken that long and it will take double that to realize the potential and vision of this wonderful thing called KIDabra International.
Yes, there is the amazing association, the incredible conference, the terrific magazine and all the other benefits. However it's the coming together of friends that make KIDabra so incredible, so special, so magical! Ask me when the conference and the association is 36 how it feels? I still won't know, but it will be nice to ponder. As conventions and associations come and go, our mission still remains the same noble effort of love and passion since the beginning to raise the bar of Children's Performers and give them a voice. Argghhhh and now to college:>)
The Big Postcard Adventure
Oops! Our apologies! A few week ago we mailed out a very nice oversize postcard about the KIDabra conference. Unfortunately we didn't realize that it was three quarters of an inch to wide to mail for the already princely sum of 44 cents First Class in the US. Instead unknown to us until after we mailed them, the Post office wanted 88 cents to deliver it. Most still went through just fine, however some recipients were asked by the postal service to pay postage due of 44 cents to receive it. Ouch! Please, if you had to pay for the extra stamp, when you see us at the conference mention it and we'll refund you a First Class stamp. By the way whether you're reading this in the US or elsewhere, yes, we are often mystified at the ever changing postal costs and regulations, however that aside, it's still a pretty amazing system.
Music Road Hotel Conference Rate Still Available
The Music Road Hotel special KIDabra Conference rate of $96.00 is available to you right up to conference time as they have rooms. Ordinarily when the room block ends rates go up to their normal rack rate. However this year everybody is working together to keep wheels rolling and we all appreciate that. It is best to call today and take care of your reservation as rooms are still sold first come first serve to us and the public. The Music Road Hotel and Inn are the nicest hotels in the area, couple that with their Free Deluxe Continental Breakfast, the waterparks if the family is there with you and they are a winner!
Please ask for the rate and if you're quoted a higher rate, politely say "Ben Humphries (Sales Director) said as long as rooms are available the KIDabra Conference rate will be honored." Call them at (865) 429-7700 or Toll Free: 1-866-615-6353
Occasionally folks will ask us about cheap hotels in the area and yes I realize this year is a little tighter for many of us. Here's why I always stay at the conference hotel when I travel and why it saves time, sanity and yes money in the long run.
1. No traffic to fight and it can be a serious bear in that area especially on weekends as it's a resort town.
2. I can head up to my room for a nap or self care break easily anytime during the day or evening. (KIDabra is practically non-stop so this is important.)
3. Networking. Seeing everybody in the evening, at breakfast and around often provides quality time with folks at the conference that are sometimes difficult during events.
4. If you're coming by yourself, try grouping with friends or roommates who become friends is a huge money saver and makes things very practical.
(Yes, we can assist with roommate matching.)
5. Every room has a refrigerator and microwave so you can save by visiting the Walmart 3 minutes away for drinks, snacks, luncheon items etc. (We do this ourselves)
6. Staying at the conference hotel helps make the conference possible by deferring the expensive room rental cost of the conference center based on number of attendees staying in the hotel.
Further Savings Ideas:
Luncheon items are available in the conference center and at the pool cabana of the hotel.
Food is extremely reasonable in the area with tons of choices, Ruby Tuesdays is walkable and has a terrific salad bar, Salsa Ritas (Fast Mexican) is also a short walk, and next to Sonic Drive-In. Cracker Barrel and a Giant Buffet are across the Parkway from the cul de sac we're in. Excellent Japanese, Italian (Olive Garden) and Mexican food (No Way Jose's) are all close. Applewood Grill is a local favorite and fantastic! If you like ribs you have got to try Callahans. A local fast food favorite of mine and Ken Scott's is Chik-fil-a in the Wal Mart parking lot. Try the chargrilled chicken sandwich with honey roasted barbecue sauce and fruit cup as your side for a healthy lunch.
If flying in, there continues to be great summer airline deals and those of you driving gas prices are actually good at the moment. Yeah!
Official KIDabra Airport Shuttle: Rocky Top Tours:
Toll Free 877-315-8687
Rocky Top Tours will provide transportation for the KIDabra Conference to the Music Road Hotel from McGhee-Tyson Airport in Knoxville and back. Please call them and let them know your arrival and departure times and they will prepare scheduled pick-up and departure times based on the group. The shuttle during scheduled pick-up times is only $30.00 each way. They will customize a pick up for one person at any time for $65.00 each way.
If you're going to sightsee any, a rental car is a great idea. Although you can do excellent sightseeing from the trolley with it's stops all over the area, including in the parking lot of our hotel, and it's is only seventy-five cents a ride.

Special KIDabra Discount Tickets for Terry Evanswood and Magic Beyond Belief
One of the really fun things about Pigeon Forge and KIDabra Conference week is the chance to spend time with Terry. He is simply one of the best family performers anywhere! Our thanks to Terry and the Magic Beyond Belief Theater for extending special half price tickets for KIDabra attendees. Anytime from the Sunday before conference through the following Sunday, tell them you're with KIDabra, show your membership card or your conference badge for the savings.
Plus one free child per paid adult admission. Go on either of the Sundays for a first time treat seeing Duane and Mary Laflin do the show, which gives Terry a day off during the season. Show times and info at pigeonforgemagic.com
KIDabra Supports Imagination Library
Once again this year we're partnering with Terry Evanswood and raising funds for the Dollywood Foundation's incredible Imagination Library which supplies books for children once a month from birth until they are five years old.
There is no charge for the participating families who are in communities throughout the US, Canada and now in England! So many of us are involved in literacy/reading programs ourselves in our day to day that this is a natural and wonderful way for us to be involved in a children's charity/movement to bring books to kids.
Last year we raised over $1200.00. Much of that came from auctioning 5 Golden Tickets to tour Terry's magical home. Well he's game again and we're cooking up another adventure with him to be auctioned Wednesday night during the KIDshow Auction. Plus we'll raise money through cell phone fines (5.00 if your phone rings during lectures) and some other fun ways.
Full info on Imagination Library at imaginationlibrary.com
We will touch base another time or two before the conference as news happens fast from here on out. There are terrific news bits throughout this newsletter, you mat want to print it out or share it with a friend! We love having you as a part of the KIDabra family and can't wait to see you in August!
Thanks,
Mark and Tami

KIDabra KIDshow Auction Update
KIDabra Conference Wednesday, August 12th
The Biggest, Best KIDshow Auction in the world just got better!
This year we've added, for the first time, a pre-auction flea market for items valued under $20.00. Then join us for the 15th annual KIDshow auction with the funny, fast paced and knowledgeable auctioneer Gary Shelton on his 15th consecutive tour of duty. The hardest day he works all year!
At an auction that has become a haven for collectors, bargain hunters, buyers and sellers, the world over you just never know what may happen during the course of an entire evening!
From props to books, DVD's, illusions and trash to Supreme treasure, bids start at $20.00 with Gary deftly at the helm, the bargains flow. For instance, two years ago Terry Herbert got into a friendly bidding war over a genuine Fraidy Cat Rabbit and won it. Last year, David Kaye walked away after hard bargaining with a Jack Hughes card duck named FiFi. A few years ago my sons discovered a rare and valuable Williams metal hand chopper in a bin of assorted props that Tami bought for them. Oh and there was some junk bought and sold too, Ken Scott several years ago purchased the beat up botania (for an outrageous fee) that has since opened every KIDabra Conference! You just never know! Well, actually you can! Come experience this crazy evening for yourself, the Internet auctions can't come close to the fun of the Annual KIDabra KIDshow Auction!
We have been hard at work tweaking the best KIDshow auction in the world to make it even better. Our thanks to Gary Shelton and David Kaye for much time spent working on this.
Plan for flea market prior to the start of the Auction for items valued under $20.00. Open from 5:30 PM until 6:45 PM. You may have up to 6 items in the flea market. Smaller items can be grouped together in a package to count and be sold as one item. 15% of sales goes to KIDabra as with the auction. Any unsold flea market items must be removed at 6:45 PM, they may not be placed in the auction.
Then at 7:00, the welcome and opening ceremonies, followed by the auction.
If you are a registered attendee you may sale up to 6 items with minimums starting at $20.00 for each item. Items may be bundled together to bring them to this minimum. No VHS Tapes or magazines. The VHS tapes may be sold at the Fleamarket. Items will need to be clearly labeled and described. Items that can't be should be Fleamarketed.
These changes should enable us to speed the auction up tremendously. Those of you with us in the past know the we sometimes finish at 1:30 AM or 2:00 AM in the morning. Thanks for helping make it such a fun night!
We will post full details on all the auction night changes in the coming days to www.kidabra.org click on Auction
A Favor for Gary
Our wonderful auctioneer and all around funny guy Gary Shelton has a huge favor. A couple of years ago at conference he did a popular breakout titled How to Be Funny for Money. His computer hard drive was recently fried during a thunder storm and he lost the text for his lecture notes. If you have a copy he can borrow he would probably buy you lunch at the conference, he'll be so happy. Contact Gary at sheltonshow@yahoo.com

The Music Road Hotel Complex hosts KIDabra Conference 2009
Great rooms, on property water parks, pools – indoor and outdoor, water slides, lazy river and more, coupled with an excellent free continental breakfast each morning make for a great whole family treat.
Melanie Michaels from Australia and John Reid from Long Island both say the Music Road is "like going to a retreat." We'll be housed in both the Music Road Hotel and the Inn with the conference center between. The Inn is only a few steps further from the free standing conference center, the Hotel is best if you have special needs, also half of the rooms at the Hotel overlook the river. If the whole family is coming pick the inn for the most water activities, although no matter which building you're in you have full access. The complex is located at Traffic light 1 in Pigeon Forge in a quiet cul de sac just off the main drag, turn at the Ruby Tuesday's Restaurant. Surrounding it for a mile in every direction are restaurants to please every taste and that huge Wal-Mart in Sevierville is only 4 or 5 minutes drive, not to mention every outlet store known to man. Call Music Road Toll Free at 866-615-6353 and tell them you're with KIDabra. Every room night counts toward o
ur
reserved block and makes the conference possible. See more at www.musicroadhotel.com.

A
Note for all KI Chapters, current and prospective: Do invite new folks to attend a couple of times, with no obligations. After those initial visits to become a member of your chapter they must first join KIDabra International, then your chapter. This makes your chapter healthy with a solid foundation.
On meeting night, leave egos down the street. I know it's challenging, we're show folk after all. Put members to work with individual assignments each meeting. Ask them to do book reports, mini lectures, prop reviews, brag sessions, marketing minute, techniques of performance, refreshments, etc... Have a great time of fellowshipping, keep video presentations to 10 minutes or less and the business meeting outside of the general meeting. (usually prior to is best.) Be respectful of your pros in attendance, quizzing them about fees and bookings make them feel like hunted animals with vultures hovering overhead and scares them away! (Really!) Above all keep it fun! Check with Dennnis Michael at Chapter 1 to see how they do this meeting after meeting, run much like a mini KIDabra Conference. dennismichael@dowhy.com
